the salivary glands produce saliva which keeps the mouth and other digestive systems moist .

it also helps in breakdown of the carbohydrates (with saliva amylase , formerly known as ptyalin ) and lubricants the passage of food from the ore-pharynx to the oesophagus to the stomach .
