In a boiling water type nuclear reactor (BWR)the fission reaction is carried out in the core which is used to heat the water and convert it into steam. The steam is used directly to run a turbine after which is it condensed and converted back to water. The water is again returned to the core to complete the process.
A BWR uses demineralised water as coolant.
