Vapour phase refining is the process of refining metal by converting it into its volatile compound and then, decomposing it to obtain a pure metal.

There are many metals which can be purified and cleaned with the help of this process named vapour phase refining.

In this, process the metal is first converted into volatile compound.

Principle of Vapour Phase Refining

Vapour Phase Refining is based on the principle that the impure metal is converted into a volatile compound and which can be collected elsewhere. It is then decomposed used to give back the pure metal.

Example

                 (impure)Zn + 2I₂ --(Δ)--> ZrI₄(volatile)

                 ZrI₄ --(Δ)--> Zr + 2I₂ (pure)
