The non contact forces in some cases do not depend on the medium separating the two bodies, that is they can even act in vacuum just like the gravitational forces, but it is always not true like the electromagnetic, electrochemical and the magnetic forces do depend on the medium separating the two bodies.

Important properties of non-contact forces:

• These are action reaction forces i.e. they are mutual.

• Gravitational force between the two masses does not depend on the medium separating two masses.

• Electrostatic and magnetic forces depend upon the medium separating the two charges/poles.

• All of them obey inverse square law and act along the line joining them.
• Whereas electrostatic and magnetic forces maybe attractive or repulsive forces, gravitational forces are always attractive.
• These forces are long range forces.
