write the reason that sodium cannot come in contact with water but Phosphorus preserves in water
Answers
Answer:
Sodium cannot come in contact of water because sodium being a highly reactive metal will react with water and form sodium oxide ( Na2O ) and hydrogen gas will be released . And also the reaction is highly exothermic as this reaction can give too much energy and may cause fire . Thatswhy it should not be preserved in water . But phosphorus is a non metal and cannot react with water in room temperature .
Explanation:
First step - Two Sodium atoms will donate its electron and form into two sodium ions .
second step - these electrons will go towards hydrogen and the formation of hygrogen gas took place and oxygen will take the bonded electrons and formation of oxide ion .
Third step - sodium ion will attract oxygen and sodium oxide formed and a lot of energy is dissipated in the surroundings .
Hope , you are satisfied with the answer .
sodium is highly reactive element, which produce large amount of heat n reaction with water .The hydrogengas produced during reaction, immediately catches fire...
while phosporus is unreactive in cold water....so it can be stored...
hope it helps you dear.....
