Theorem of Parallel Axes and Theorem of Perpendicular Axes:

Expressions of moment of inertias of regular geometrical shapes given in the table3 are about their axes of symmetry. These are derived by integration. However, every time the axis need not be the axis of symmetry. In simple transformations it may be parallel or perpendicular to the symmetrical axis. For example, if a rod is rotated about one of its ends, the axis is parallel to its axis of symmetry. If a disc or a ring is rotated about its diameter, the axis is perpendicular to the central axis. In such cases, simple transformations are possible in the expressions of moment of inertias. These are called theorem of parallel axes and theorem of perpendicular axes

Explanation:

Parallel & Perpendicular Axis Theorems

Parallel & Perpendicular Axis TheoremsThe moment of inertia of a body about an axis parallel to the body passing through its center is equal to the sum of moment of inertia of body about the axis passing through the center and product of mass of the body times the square of distance between the two axes.
