Vitamins are categorised based on their solubility. A vitamin that dissolves in water is called water-soluble vitamin, and vitamins that are dissolved in fats/oils are categorised as fat soluble vitamins.

While water soluble vitamins are absorbed in the body, the fat soluble vitamins are absorbed in the small intestines.

Water soluble vitamins are not stored in the body. Fat soluble ones are stored in the liver and other fatty tissues.

There water soluble vitamins are 9 in number (Vit B1, vit B2, Vit B3, Vit B5, Vit B6, Vit B7, Vit B9, Vit B12 and Vitamin C).

The four fat soluble vitamins are Vitamins A, K, D and E.
