It is because,   x + y = 1 and x - y = 0.5. So, with elimination, you would get 2y = 1.5, y = 0.75. And therefore, x + 0.75 = 1, x = 0.25

easy your answer is 0.25 and 0.75 because

0.25 + 0.75 is 1 and their difference 0.75-0.25 = 0.50 or 0.5
