OCTET RULE :-

The principle of acquiring eight electrons in the valence shell of an atom to attain stability is called octet rule .

EXAMPLES OF SOME ELEMENTS WITH OCTET CONFIGURATION :-

  • Neon
  • Argon
  • Krypton
  • Xenon

LIMITATIONS OF OCTET RULE :-

➸ In some compounds the number of electrons around the central atom is less than eight i.e, incomplete octet

EXAMPLE :- LiCl , BCl₃

➸ In some compounds the number of electrons around the central atom is more than eight i.e, Expanded octet

EXAMPLE :- PF₅ , SF₆

➸ The octet rule is not satisfied in some Transitions such as Fe²⁺ , Fe³⁺ , Cu²⁺ ,...
