x can do a piece of work in 40 days.he works at it for 8 days and then y finished in it 16 days.how long Will they together take to complete the work?​

X could complete 1/40 of the work in 1 day.

So work completed in 8 days = (1/40)*8=8/40=1/5. Amount of work left = 1–(1/5)=4/5.

So y can complete 4/5 of the work in 16 days.

Which means y can complete the whole work in 16*(5/4)=20 days.

So y can complete 1/20 of the work in 1 day.

Amount of work that will be done in 1 day by both of them

=(1/20)+(1/40)=3/40 of the work.

Number of days taken by them to complete the work =

40/3=13 and 1/3 days
