Kolkata,19th December, 2016.
On Sunday, 18th December, the eastern fringes of the city witnessed a half-marathon, sponsored by Bharti Airtel. It was full of colour, joy and fun. Vehicular traffic was stopped from 7 A.M. and normal Sunday traffic began crawling again from 9:30 A.M. The city police gave a very good account of themselves in managing the show.
The race was run from Kankurgachhi to the no. 1 gate of Kolkata Airport, along the Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue. It started at 7:30 A.M. and the last person to complete the race finished at 9:15 A.M. About 1,100 people participated in the half-marathon, out of which 875 were young men and women in their teens, twenties, thirties and forties. 225 people in the age group of 50-65 also took part. It was very heartening to see 15 of the older men complete the race, along with 563 of the young men and women.
Besides Airtel, the other leading sponsors of the race were Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Pepsico India and Times of India. The objective of the event was to encourage people to donate blood without fear and save lives; accordingly, banners and festoons were put up across the entire stretch of Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue. It was wonderful to see the sponsors give away certificates to the participants at the end of the event. People below the age of 20 and those above 50 were also given small gift hampers.
At the end of the event, the Commissioner of Police, Bidhannagar Commissionerate, thanked the participants and the sponsors for hosting the half-marathon. The Regional Manager of Bharti Airtel thanked the Police, the Civil Administration and the participants for making the half-marathon of 2016 a success.
