From a mixture of sugar, salt and iron filings, iron filings can be removed by using a magnet as iron gets attracted to any body having magnetic property.

We are then left with a mixture of salt and sugar which can be separated by using alcohol.

It is because sugar gets dissolved in alcohol whereas the salt does not.So we simply mix the two components in alcohol and then filter the mixture to retrieve the salt as a residue.

The sugar and alcohol solution passes through the filter which is then evaporated to get the free sugar.
