You are given kerosene, turpentine and water. In which of these does light travel the fastest? (refractive index of given substances as: kerosene n = 1.44, turpentine n = 1.47, water n = 1.33)

Answer:

Explanation:

e know that the Refractive Index(n) of the material increases its capacity to low the speed of the light. Hence, If the Refractive Index of the material will be high then the speed of the light in that particular Medium will be low and vice versa.

Now, As per as the questions,

n of Kerosene = 1.44

n of  Turpentine = 1.47

n of water = 1.33

We can see that the Refractive Index of the Turpentine is highest, hence the speed of the light in Turpentine will be low as compared to Kerosene and Water.

In case of the kerosene the speed of the light will be greater than that of the Turpentine but it will be less than water, since the Refractive Index of the Kerosene is greater than water but less than Turpentine.

Speed of the light in water will be highest in the given case as the Refractive Index is lowest of all thr

Hence, It is Proved that that the speed of the light in water is highest Refractive Index is high among three.

Hope it helps!
