You have 2 straight lengths of wood. How can you cut one of them so that one of the three pieces is the average length of the other two?

Consider the case where you have two long straight pieces of wood. One of them is to be cut in such a way that it satisfies the above mentioned condition.

 

To achieve this, we must cut one of the pieces in the ratio of 1 : 2. So we will now have three pieces with us.

 

On calculating the average of the full piece and the one-third piece, it comes out to be equal to the length of the two-third piece.

 

Hence, we must cut one piece in the ratio 1 : 2.
