Fill the 3 litre bottle and empty it in the 5 litre bottle.
Now the 5 litre bottle has 3 litres of water.
Again fill the 3 litre bottle and empty it in the 5 litre bottle while doing this collect the water overflowing.
Now empty the 5litre bottle and fill it with the overflowed water this will measure 1 litre as 6-5=1
now fill the 3 litre bottle and empty it in the 5litre bottle which already has 1 litre in it.
Hence you will get 4 litres of water.

Step-by-step explanation:

  • Fill the 5 litre can from the tap
  • Empty the 5 litre can into the 3 litre can - leaving 2 litres in the 5 litre can.
  • Pour away the contents of the 3 litre can.
  • Fill the 3 litre can with the 2 litres from the 5 litre can - leaving 2 litres in the 3 litre can.
  • Fill the 5 litre can from the tap.
  • Fill the remaining 1 litre space in the 3 litre can from the 5 litre can.
  • Leaving 4 litres in the 5 litre can.
