We had a preliminary essay writing test in our school. I passed in that and was chosen as one of the representatives from my school. So I had to prepare for the competition. I started preparing a week in advance. I went to the library and collected points for my essay. I also asked my uncle and father to give me ideas for the topic.
Every morning I used to get up early and sit in the garden and think about the details that could be included in the essay. I would write a rough essay and reframe it so that it would sound better and be grammatically correct. The morning air helped me to think better and I would get a lot of new ideas.
On the day of the competition I was fully prepared and felt confident. I reached the venue 15 minutes early. So that I could settle down properly and be ready to write the essay with a composed mind. The other participants also arrived soon. There was a lot of excitement. Each one was eager to do his best. The bell rang. We went and sat in the hall. The teacher came and distributed the papers and wished us good luck. There was pin drop silence. Each one started writing his essay. Time just flew. I completed the essay in time and even went through it once. The bell rang and it was time to submit our papers.
The results were to be announced the next day. We eagerly waited for them. When I reached school the next day I was welcomed by a group of students who congratulated me on my success. The principal called me to the office and told me to accompany him to the Public School for the prize distribution.
I won the first prize. It was a cash prize of Rs. 10,000. There is a orphanage near my school. We often go there to do social work. I donated the money to the institution
Inter-school competitions are held on various topics, throughout the year involving several schools. This is a very healthy thing as a student is assessed, not only within the school, but is compared with the students of all the other schools too. These competitions give the younger generation a boost and raise their confidence while progressively developing a positive attitude towards competitions. Two months ago, I had the privilege of taking part in an inter-school extempore competition. First, a screening contest was held in our school. Around twenty students delivered a speech on the topic. “Is the education of women necessary for the upliftment of Indian society? We all had prepared well, but the final result had the names of the best three participants only. My joy knew no bounds, when I saw my name in the list. I had no idea that I would be selected. I had done well, no doubt, but to represent my school in an inter-school competition was a very big responsibility.
The competition was a month away. A month? It was too short a time to prepare on all the topic under the sun, I selected a number of recent topics and started preparing myself earnestly. I wanted to win laurels for my school. It did not mater to me if I did not win, but at the same time, I wanted to earn a good reputation for my school. My father helped me a lot, he would point out weaknesses, and within a month, I was ready to face the contest.
The day of the competition dawned. Oh! It was a very gloomy rainy day. My spirits sagged but my parents encouraged me saying I was sure to get success. I reached the Youth Hostel, where the contest was scheduled to be held. There were many contestants, all waiting with bated breaths, for the competition to commence.
The judges arrived, and the rules of the contest were told.
