A campaign on 'Harmful effects of smoking on human health'
1. It will make the people aware of the negative health effects of tobacco which currently leads to nearly 6 million deaths each year. This includes the 6 lakh non-smokers who die due to exposure to second hand smoke. Cigarettes and chewing tobacco can cause heart disease, strokes, ulcers, respiratory infections and many more health problems.
2. It will familiarize them with the truth about tobacco. Each year WHO selects a theme for the World No Tobacco Day. Publicity materials related to the theme like brochures, fliers, posters, websites, videos and press releases are created and distributed. The theme has titles like "Tobacco kills, don't be duped", "Tobacco : deadly in any form or disguise". WHO emphasizes the "truth" so that people may not be led away by marketing strategies and illusions created by the tobacco industry.
3. It will encourage them to play their part in reducing tobacco consumption. They will get to know that WHO confers awards to organizations or individuals who have made an exceptional contribution to reducing tobacco consumption.
