You read information from the following passage from an online newsletter by
David Perrell about famous American Anthropologist, Margaret Mead.
Anthropologist Margaret Mead was asked by a student what she considered to
be the first sign of civilization in a culture.
Mead said that the first sign of civilization was femur- a bone in the thigh of
humans. It broke and then healed. It means that some one took care of the
person and helped to heal the bone.
In the animal kingdom, if the bone of an animal breaks, it dies. The animal dies
because it cannot run away from danger, or go to the river to drink water or
hunt for food. It becomes someone else’s food. So, no animal can live if it has a
broken leg because it cannot be helped by another animal for the bone to heal.
Helping someone else through difficulty means that we are a part of human
civilization. We are at humans only when we serve others. Be civilized.
