Cotton Mill Gutted
March 21, 2020, last night a tragedy happened in industrial area in Sundar Nagar. A fire broke out in a cotton mill, which destroyed cotton cloth and bales of cotton worth millions of rupees. It happened in the middle of the night. The residents were roused by screams and cries. As they went out they were shocked to see the flames emanating from the windows of the mill; trapped people were screaming for help; some of them were climbing down by tying cloths to the railings.
The fire-fighters teams arrived within 15 minutes. They tried to rescue the victims by using their tall, sliding ladders. After five hours of struggle the fire-fighters were able to control the conflagration. 50 people were injured badly; they were rushed to the nearby hospitals. Approximately 10 people were killed. The sad news had a depressing impact on all the residents in the surrounding areas.
A judicial enquiry has been ordered by the Government. Compensation of ₹ 200000 for each person deceased, and ₹ 100000 for the injured has been announced by the Government.
