The zero reading (minimum range) of the outside micrometre while measuring with a 50 mm to 75 mm micrometre is 50 mm.

  • When the spindle and anvil of micrometre screw gauge are made to touch each other, then, the zero on the main scale should match with a zero on the circular scale.
  • However due to wear and tear or manufacturing defect the two zeros usually do not coincide with each other, then the vernier is said to have zero error.
  • There are 2 types of zero errors.
  • Positive zero error occurs when the ‘0’ marking of the thimble scale is below the horizontal reference line of the main scale.
  • Negative zero error occurs when the ‘0’ marking of the thimble scale is below the horizontal reference line of the main scale.
