The angle of elevation of the top of tree at the point it touches the ground is 30° if a 6m tall tree broke down at a height of 2 m.

Given:

  • Due to the heavy storm, a 6m tall tree broke down at a height of 2 m.

To Find:

  • The angle of elevation of the top of tree at the point it touches the ground.

Solution:

Step 1:

Calculate the length of part of Tree that touches ground

6 - 2 = 4 m

Step 2:

Now broken part ( 4 m ) and unbroken part (2 m) of  tree create a right angle with ground

For The angle of elevation of the top of tree at the point it touches the ground

Height of unbroken part  is Perpendicular

Height of  broken part  is Hypotenuse

Step 3:

Assume that  The angle of elevation is α and calculate sinα

sinα = Perpendicular/Hypotenuse

sinα = 2/4

sinα = 1/2

=> α =  30°  (∵ sin 30° = 1/2)

Hence The angle of elevation of the top of tree at the point it touches the ground is 30°
