1. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions below :
You have already read the anecdotes from Alexander's life. If you do not remember the same is
recapitulated in brief. While passing through a forest with his army chief he saw Diogenes basking in
the Sun. He was lying comfortably enjoying the Sun. Alexander the great got off his horse. Diogenes
did not even sit up after seeing him. Alexander's army chief flew into rage as Diogenes did not care to
stand up to respect him. He drew out his sword to punish him but his master stopped him. Most respect-
fully Alexander said to Diogenes, "O great saint! Tell me what can I do for you. I am ready to give you
whatever you ask."
Diogenes gave him the most astonishing reply. "You can give me nothing because I do not want
anything. Only let the Sun rays, given by God, come to me. You have obstructed them by standing
between the Sun and me."
Diogenes was the happiest person because he was content with what he had. Though he had
neither wealth nor grand palaces to live in, he was the richest person because he did not want anything.
And Alexander had every wealth except the wealth of contentment. A person who is content, is free
from every worry and desire that are the source of unhappiness. Listen to what Kabir says - when a
person gets rid of desire, making himself anxietyless and carefree, he is no less than a king. The real
king is one who does not want anything. We cannot be completely free from our desires but we can
certainly limit our desires and needs. This will help us to become happy.
