2) Immediate cause of revolt of 1857
The British introduced the Enfield rifle in the army. The cartridge was greased from fat of cow and pig. The soldiers had to bite it off before loading it into the gun. This hurt the religious sentiments of both Hindu and Muslim soldiers.
