When a small amount of acid such as hydrochloric acid is added to water, individual ions of the acid are dissociated. This process is known as ionisation. So hydrochloric acid separates into positively charged hydrogen ions and negatively charged chlorine ions.

(ii) Mixing of an acid with water is also called dilution. Addition water results in the decrease in the concentration of ions, (H30*) per unit volume.
