a 50kg man is standing at one end of a 25m long boat .He starts running towads the other end.on reaching the other end his velocity is 2m/s.if the mass of the boat is 200kg ,the final velocity of the boat is?

m = mass of the man = 50 kg

M = mass of the boat = 200 kg

v = velocity of the man after reaching the other end = 2 m/s

V = velocity of  boat after the man reach the other end = ?

Since initial both man and boat were at rest

P₁ = initial total momentum of the man and boat system = 0 kgm/s

P₂ = final total momentum of the man and boat system

Using conservation of momentum

P₂ = P₁

m v + (m + M) V = 0

inserting the values in the above equation

(50 x 2) + (50 + 200) V = 0

V = - 0.4 m/s
