(a)When the stick, OA is half immersed in water, a ray of light, OC emerges from O passes from water into the air. The ray of light, OC gets refracted away from the normal i.e., along CX and the other ray of light, OD gets refracted away along DY. These two rays CX and DY i.e., refracted appear to meet a point, when it is produced backward. Therefore, I is the virtual image of the object, O at the end. Hence, the stick appears to be bent at the surface.
(b) When a coin is dropped inside the tumbler, the coin appears to rise as the glass tumbler is slowly filled with water. The phenomenon responsible for this effect is known refraction of light because it comes out into the air from the water.
