Explanation:

(a) When we look into the tank full of water, the depth of water seems to less than it actually is. This happens because of the phenomenon “Refraction of light”. When the ray of light passes from the water tank to the air, then the ray of light gets refracted away from the normal. So, when we take a look into the tank, we look at a virtual image of the bottom of the tank in place of the actual bottom formed due to the refraction of the light coming from the water into the air.

(b) Refraction of the light is the phenomenon due to which a pencil partly immerses in water and held obliquely appears to be bent at the water surface.
