a)  CH_{4}  + O_{2} ->?

Balanced Equation:

CH_{4} + 2 O_{2} -> CO_{2} + H_{2} O

b)CH_{4} + 3Cl_{2}  ->?

Balanced Equation:                     CH_{4}  + 3Cl_{2}  -> CH_{3} Cl +3 HCl

Explanation:

a) CH_{4}  + O_{2} ->?

CH_{4} + 2 O_{2} -> CO_{2} + H_{2} O

when methane reacts  with oxygen forming carbon dioxide  with water

To balance the equation:

C atoms: Balanced with 1 C on both side.

H atoms : On left side there are 4 Hydrogen atoms and  2 Hydrogen atoms on right.put a coefficient 2 in front of the H_{2} O

O atoms : There are 2 Oxygen atoms in left side and 4 in right.put a coefficient 2 in front of the O_{2}.

b) CH_{4}  + 3Cl_{2}  -> CH_{3} Cl +3 HCl

The above given reaction is said to be chlorination and it is a kind of substitution of hydrogen atoms by other chlorine atoms.
