Explanation:

(a) We can bend light away from the normal by passing it from a denser medium into a rarer medium. From Snell’s law, we get that the ratio of the sines of the angles of incidence and refraction is constant.  So, from the law, we found that the ray of light bends away from the normal when it travels from a denser medium to a rarer medium.

(b) If the incidence would be at the right angle to the surface of a substance, then light must travel out of the substance if it is not going to be refracted.
