An urban area or urban agglomeration is a human settlement with high population density and infrastructure of built environment. Urban areas are created through urbanization and are categorized by urban morphology as cities, towns, conurbations or suburbs. In urbanism, the term contrasts to rural areas such as villages and hamlets and in urban sociology or urban anthropology it contrasts with natural environment. The creation of early predecessors of urban areas during the urban revolution led to the creation of human civilization with modern urban planning, which along with other human activities such as exploitation of natural resources leads to human impact on the environment.

Life in urban areas is way different from that of rural areas because of rapid urbanisation and industrialisation in the cities. There are vast differences with respect to population density, pollution, development, education and employment opportunities and also other amenities which are present in urban areas but lacking in villages which makes them underdeveloped. However, there are both advantages and disadvantages of urban life. The main four advantages of urban life are as follows:

  • Infrastructure: Better and developed infrastructure in the cities-good roads,well-built houses.Banks are available in every place(more in number) which helps people in meeting their financial requirements.
  • Medical amenities: Proper and timely medical attention and treatment is required for every ailing patient. In case of any emergency (accidents/disease/ disorder), in which a person has to be rushed to the hospital immediately ,the cities provide an advantage here as hospitals are greater in number along with availability of better doctors and better medical facilities( like ambulance, etc.)
  • Education and employment opportunities: There are many good schools, colleges, universities in cities providing the best infrastructure for the aspiring candidates. Scope of higher education is rarely found in a village. Also, there is a better chance of getting a suitable and pleasant occupation in cities, unlike in villages where agricultural sector becomes the main sector for employment.
  • Transport: There are better and highly developed transport facilities in modern cities which makes mobility much easier. There are many options of public transport such as buses, motorcars, trams, for comfortable and quick transport.
