a lending library has a fixed charge for the first three days and an additional charge for eacg day thereafter . saritha paid Rs.27 for a book kept for seven days, which susy paid Rs. 21 for yhe book she kept for five days . find the fixed charge and the charge for each extra day?

Solution-

Let the fixed charge be x.

and let the charge per day be y.

Amount paid by Saritha = 27

• 27 = x + (7 - 3)y
• 27 = x + 4y -------- (a)

Amount paid by Susy = 21

• 21 = x + (5-3)y
• 21 = x + 2y ----------- (b)

Subtracting (a) from (b) , we get,

• (x + 2y) - (x + 4y) = 21 - 27
• x + 2y - x - 4y = -6
• -2y = -6
• y = 3

Now, putting the value of y in equation (a)

• 27 = x + 4 × (3)
• 27= x + 12
• x = 27 - 12
• x = 15

Hence,

• The fixed charge is 15 rupees
• The charge per day is 3 rupees
