Explanation:

(a) Balanced chemical reaction:

2 K C l O_{3(s)} \stackrel{\Delta\left(M n O_{2}\right)}{\longrightarrow} 2 K C l_{(s)}+3 O_{2(g)}

  • The Potassium chlorate in presence of heat undergoes decomposition to form potassium chloride and oxygen gas is evolved.
  • This reaction takes place in the presence of manganese dioxide which is a catalyst. This is a decomposition reaction as single reactant is decomposed to give two products.

(b) Balanced chemical reaction:

2 M g_{(s)}+C O_{2(g)} \rightarrow 2 M g O_{(s)}+C_{(s)}

  • Magnesium oxide is the major product formed in the above reaction. This a combustion (magnesium burns) and oxidation (oxide of magnesium is released) reaction.
