Let the no. of Ni2+ = x
Then the no. of Ni3+ = 0.98 - x
Since the oxide is neutral.
Therefore, 2x + 3(0.98-x) + 1×(-2) = 0
2x + 2.94 -3x -2 = 0
-x + 0.94 = 0
x = 0.94
so, fraction of Ni2+ =
 \frac{0.94 \times 100}{0.98}
= 95.91% = 96%
And fraction of Ni3+ = 100 - 96 = 4%
crystal possess metal deficiency defect.
