Stars are point size source of light. It is a very distant object. So the light from this point size source enters the earths atmosphere where it experiences deviation and bends due to the unevenly distributed density of gases and particles.
This deviation sometimes decreases the intensity of light and sometimes increases which causes the twinkling of stars.
