Coil of wire is used in an electromagnet instead of a straight wire because the strength of an electromagnet is directly proportional to the number of turns in the coil .So if we use a straight wire , the strength of the electromagnet will be much lesser than that of a coil of wire.

The magnetic field generated by a straight wire is circular shaped around the circumference of wire. It has no poles.
