After examining burial practices in the past, it is evident that social inequality was a major stigma that affected a sizeable portion of the population of a country.

The nobles and lords who were considered to be of the highest status were often buried in great pomp and fanfare, with vast mausoleums filled with gold, wine, servants and other precious artefacts. One the other hand, the paupers and less affluent section of society were often only provided with a patch of land outside the city to bury their families. Such graves were not provided with any precious metals and gems, nor did they have any elaborate construction or structure built over them.
