Although both rna and dna as genetic material however dna is the genetic material in most of the cases and not rna why?.

Following are the properties and functions of which should be fulfilled by a substance to act as genetic material:-

1. It should chemically and structurally be stable.

(But free 2'0H group in RNA makes it more liable and easily degradable)

Thus DNA is more stable.

even thymine in place of uracil confers more stability to DNA.

2.The genetic material should undergo mutations.

But RNA being unstable mutates at very fast rate .

Which may be harmful in due course of time.

Thus during evolution DNA a more stable , self replicating molecule was selected as genetic material in most of the organisms.
