The magnesium ribbon is rubbed by Sand paper before burning becuase ...due to exposure of magnesium ribbon in air ...the layer of oxides gets covered on its surface....so to remove the dirt and the layer of oxides the sand paper is rubbed for total combustion of ribbon....
