Answer:

Three Round Table Conferences happened during the struggle for India’s independence.

1st Round Table Conference : November 1930-January 1931, London.

  • Headed by British PM Ramsay MacDonald.
  • Congress and a few business leaders boycotted the conference
  • Attendees from India - Muslim League, Dr.B.R.Ambedkar, Liberals, Princely States representatives and a few other religions representatives.
  • Conference failed because the major party- Congress was not a part of it in the backdrop of ongoing Civil Disobedience Movement in India.

2nd Round Table Conference : September-December 1931, London

  • Gandhi and Irwin signed a pact on 5th march'1931, known as Delhi Pact. According to it Gandhi agreed to withdraw the Civil disobedience movement and also agreed to attend the 2nd Round Table Conference, in return of releasing political prisoners not convicted for murder and a few other provisions.(Gandhi pitched for release of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev also, but this provision was not accepted by Irwin)
  • Other groups such as Muslim League, depressed class leaders(Dr.B.R.Ambedkar), Liberals also attended.
  • Conference ended on a deadlock over an issue of separate electorate. Gandhi was against it while, depressed class, Muslims and other groups pitched for it.

3rd Round Table Conference : November-December 1932

  • Major Indian representatives boycotted this conference- mainly Congress.
  • Muslim league, Depressed class leaders(Dr.B.R.Ambedkar)attended it (as usual).
  • The most important outcome of this conference was the formation of The Government of India Act, 1935, over which our basic structure of government depends.
