Ms. Sarah Fuller was the principal of the Horace Mann School for the Deaf in Boston, and she taught Helen to speak by having Helen place her hands on her (meaning Ms. Fuller's) face. Ms. Fuller allowed Helen to feel the position of her lips and mouth as she made sounds, and Helen copied these positions and learned to speak. Ms. Fuller gave Helen 11 lessons in all in 1890, and Helen vividly remembered speaking her first sentence, "It is warm." Ms. Fuller and Anne Sullivan could understand Helen better than other people could at first. Anne Sullivan built on Ms. Fuller's work. From these lessons in articulation, Helen Keller learned to speak well, and through practice.
