First you must have to know which protocol is used for sending an email.Following protocol is used for email SMTP,POP3,IMAP.
SMTP is simple mail transfer protocol sending email across internet.
POP3 is post office protocol version 3 used to receive email from remote server to local email.
IMAP is Internet message access protocol used to accessing email from remote web server to local unit.
Now let me tell you difference between e-mail and traditional mail
