Bilirubin is formed from Heme -> Biliverdin -> Bilirubin with help of enzyme Biliverdin reductase. all these take place in macrophages

Now this Bilirubin formed is conjugated in liver with glucuronic acid by the help of enzyme glucuronyl transferase. Conjugated Bilirubin is soluble in water.

This conjugated bilirubin is excreated in Bile, which helps in emulsification of fat in small intestine.
