Define hydrolysis. And it's procedure and observation and reasons of observation. With diagram.

Hi friend,

Breakdown of water into its constituent gases on passing electric current is known as hydrolysis.

PROCEDURE-:

Arrange the apparatus as shown in the pic.
Pass electric current.

OBSERVATION-:

Water level in test tubes A and B changes, bubbles rise up.

The water is displaced in downward direction.

Level of water at cathode is very low.

Level of water at anode is high.

REASONS FOR OBSERVATION-:

Water breaks into hydrogen and oxygen on passing electric current.

Hydrogen get collected at cathode and is two times in volume. Therefore water is less and gas in more at cathode.

At anode water is more because volume of oxygen is less.

As per the formula hydrogen is two times as compared to oxygen (H2O).
