Democracy is a form of Governance that is for the people, of the people and by the people. Free and fair elections helps the people of a democracy to choose their representatives, the latter then form a Government or sit in the opposition depending on whether or not their group or party is in majority or minority.

In a democracy, the Government of the day has to rule in a responsible manner, as per the country's constitution, because they are eventually accountable for all their actions and are answerable to the electorate. Should the Government act in an authoritarian manner, the people could vote in favour of others in the next election and, so, their defeat would be imminent. It is, therefore, said that democratic Governments ideally work in the best interests of its people.
