Because
it meant extra rations for a household which had to face food shortages. They would get an extra pound of butter which could be used to bake cakes and cookies, a happy occasion for the annex members to look forward to amidst the pervading gloom and doom. Even though they would get a lesser amount being Jews who had to depend on the black market. Then another Christmas they got extra cooking oil, candy and molasses. It was also a time for exchanging Christmas gifts and adding a little bit of joy to their otherwise tough lives, especially for the youngsters.
