Cerebral Cortex – Functional Areas.The cerebral cortex is divided into sensory, motor and association areas. Sensory areas receive sensory input, motor areas control movement of muscles. Association areas are involved with more complex functions such as learning, decision making and complex movements such as writing.

The cerebral cortex have the following functional area:

  • Frontal lobes: These are located in the front of the brain and are responsible for three main function ; voluntary motor activity, speaking ability and elaboration of thought.
  • The parietal lobes : these are located behind the frontal lobes and in front of occipetal lobes.These are responsible for the processing of sensory informations such as smell , touch etc.
  • The temporal lobes: These are responsible for processing of memory information and hearing or auditory signals and are located on the sides of the brain. These also control speech and language.
  • The occipetal lobes :. These recieve signals from optic nerve and process the visual information located on the back of the brain , these are significant for the sight of a person.
