Kalinga war:-

The Kalinga War was fought in India between the Maurya Empire under Ashoka and the state of Kalinga. Kalinga was an independent feudal kingdom located on the coast of the present-day state of Odisha and the northern parts of Andhra Pradesh. The Kalinga War, the only major war Ashoka fought after his accession to the throne, included one of the largest and bloodiest battles in history. Though Kalinga put up a stiff resistance against the brutal strength of the Maurya Empire, they were outnumbered. The bloodshed of this war is said to have prompted Ashoka to adopt Buddhism. However, he retained Kalinga and incorporated it into the Maurya Empire.

Answer:

Kalinga was the only independent state that Ashoka could not conquer. He waged a war against the ruler of Kalinga. So the great Kalinga war was fought which moved Ashoka's heart. Both sides suffered losses but Kalinga suffered the most. Ashoka went to the battle field and the sight of the soldiers lying dead and wounded, widows and orphans moved Ashoka. So war was declared off and the concept of Dhammagosha was adopted.
