describe Sankranti holidays
Answers
Sankranti is a winter harvest festival which is celebrated throughout India. It is an important Hindu festival which is celebrated as a thanksgiving ceremony for the year's harvest. It is dedicated to the Sun. It is known by different names in different areas. For example, in Tamil Nadu it is known as Pongal, in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar it is known as Khichdi.
I had Sankranti holidays for a week. I went to my cousin's house for the holidays. There the festival was celebrated for four days. My uncle cut the sugarcane and distributed its pieces to everyone. My aunt cooked new rice. She boiled rice, milk and jaggery. This dish is typically made in all households on Pongal.
She made khichdi and laddus with til and jaggery. She gave rice, til, woollen clothes and blankets to poor people. My uncle and cousin went out and flew kites. Many neighbours joined them in flying kites. We had a lot of fun.
In the evening we had a party. All our relatives and friends came to meet us. There were a lot of traditional dishes which we all enjoyed. Everyone was given new clothes and gifts. In the next few days we visited all our relatives and friends. We took sweets and gifts for them.
In this way I enjoyed wearing new dresses, relished the lovely traditional dishes and socialized with people during the holidays. On the fifth day I returned home with lots of gifts.
