People were angered by the jallianwala Bagh incident. People in North Indian towns took to the streets and attacked the symbols of British power such as barracks, post offices, etc. Unable to manage the situation, British opted for repressive measures. Satyagrahis were forced to craw on the streets, rub their noses on the ground and to salaam the sahibs (British). This incident evoked immense hatred among Indiana towards the British.
Hope this helps
