the earth at the equator receives direct rays from the sun, so it's quite hot there thus till 23.5N and S latitudes its known as torrid zone. it receives slanting rays between 23.5N and S to 66.5N and S and thus has a moderate climate known as temperate zone. the earth receives extremely oblique rays from the sun and has a cold climate thus known as frigid zone
